Fridge Not Cooling but the Compressor Is Running? What It Means
If your fridge hums away but stays warm inside, the cold is either not being made or not being circulated. Here are the common causes, what you can check yourself, and when it needs a technician.

What 'running but not cooling' usually means
When the compressor is clearly running — you can hear or feel the hum — but the fridge is not getting cold, the problem is usually one of two things: the system is not making cold properly, or it is making cold but not moving it into the fridge compartment.
That points away from a dead compressor and towards airflow, the defrost system, the cooling fan, the door seal, or refrigerant. The good news is that several of these are common, fixable faults.
Common reasons a fridge runs but will not cool
- ✓ Dirty condenser coils — the coils at the back or underneath shed heat. Caked in dust and lint, they cannot, and cooling drops off.
- ✓ A faulty evaporator fan — many fridges use a small fan to push cold air from the freezer into the fridge. If it stops, the freezer may stay cold while the fridge turns warm.
- ✓ Frost or ice blocking airflow — a defrost-system fault lets ice build up over the vents, blocking the cold air from reaching the fridge compartment.
- ✓ A worn door seal — a perished or loose seal lets warm air in, so the unit runs constantly and still cannot hold temperature.
- ✓ Low refrigerant from a leak — if gas has leaked out, the compressor runs but there is little cooling. This needs the leak found and repaired, not just a top-up.
- ✓ A thermostat or control fault — a faulty thermostat or control board can run the compressor without managing the temperature correctly.
- ✓ An overpacked fridge — packing items tight against the internal vents blocks the cold-air flow.
What you can safely check yourself
A few checks are safe and sometimes solve it: switch the fridge off and gently clean the condenser coils at the back or underneath; check the door seal closes cleanly all the way round; make sure the fridge is not packed so tightly that the internal vents are blocked; and give the unit some breathing space if it is jammed against a wall or sitting in a hot spot.
If you can see ice built up inside, switching the unit off and letting it fully defrost for a few hours can confirm a defrost fault — but if the ice keeps returning, it needs a technician.
What needs a technician
Anything involving the sealed refrigerant system, the compressor, the cooling fan, or the defrost components needs a qualified technician. Refrigerant work in particular must be done properly — finding and sealing the leak first, then recharging — rather than simply topping up gas that will leak out again.
How Van Biljoens repairs fridges that will not cool
Van Biljoens repairs domestic fridges and freezers in our Pretoria workshop, and we have done so since 1956. For fridges and freezers we offer collection and delivery across Pretoria and surrounding areas, so you do not have to transport a heavy unit yourself.
Every repair starts with an assessment: a R300 assessment fee is paid upfront and covers inspection, testing and diagnosis. We then send a written quote, usually within 1 to 3 working days, and if you accept it the R300 is deducted from the repair cost. Repairs are backed by our 3 Month Repair Guarantee, which covers our workmanship and the specific repaired fault.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my fridge running but not getting cold?
The compressor running while the fridge stays warm usually points to airflow or cooling-delivery problems rather than a dead compressor: dirty condenser coils, a stopped evaporator fan, ice blocking the vents from a defrost fault, a worn door seal, or low refrigerant from a leak. Clean the coils and check the seal first; if it still will not cool, it needs a technician.
Can dirty coils stop a fridge from cooling?
Yes. The condenser coils shed the heat the fridge removes. When they are caked in dust and lint they cannot release that heat, so the compressor runs but cooling falls away. Cleaning them with the unit switched off is a safe, worthwhile check.
Is it the compressor or the gas?
If the compressor is clearly running, the unit is usually not making or not circulating cold — often a fan, defrost, airflow or refrigerant-leak issue rather than a failed compressor. A proper diagnosis tells the two apart; topping up gas without finding the leak is only a temporary fix.
Do you collect fridges for repair in Pretoria?
Yes. Collection and delivery is available for domestic fridges and freezers across Pretoria and surrounding areas (a transport charge applies, confirmed when you book), so you do not have to move a heavy unit yourself.
