Why Professional Aircon Installation Matters

A poor installation can reduce efficiency, void your warranty, cause water damage, and create refrigerant handling risks. Understanding what professional installation involves helps you make informed decisions.

What professional installation involves

A proper installation is not just mounting the unit on the wall and connecting the pipes. It includes: correct siting and mounting angle of the indoor unit, correct location for the outdoor unit (adequate airflow, drainage, vibration isolation), correct pipe sizing and routing, proper vacuuming of the refrigerant circuit before charging, correct refrigerant charge to specification, leak checking, electrical wiring to code, drain installation with correct slope, and commissioning and testing.

  • Correct unit siting for airflow and drainage
  • Vacuuming the refrigerant circuit before charging
  • Leak test after commissioning
  • Electrical connections to code
  • Condensate drain installed with correct slope

Refrigerant handling

Refrigerants must be handled by qualified technicians. In South Africa, handling of refrigerants requires appropriate certification. Incorrect charging — too much or too little refrigerant — degrades performance and can damage the compressor.

R32 is mildly flammable and has specific handling requirements. It cannot be serviced using tools designed only for R410A. Using the wrong equipment creates safety risk.

Warranty implications

Most air conditioner manufacturers require installation by a qualified technician as a condition of the product warranty. An installation performed by an unqualified person — or a DIY installation — can void the warranty, meaning any fault within the warranty period becomes your cost.

Ask for a commissioning report or installation certificate when work is completed. This documents that the installation was performed correctly.

Drain installation

A condensate drain installed without sufficient slope will accumulate water and eventually produce water damage. In a ceiling installation — such as a cassette above a suspended ceiling — poor drainage can go unnoticed for months, causing significant damage to the ceiling and structure before it is discovered.

Professional installers understand the gravity requirements and will route the drain correctly. This is one of the most commonly neglected aspects of budget or DIY installation.

Getting it right the first time

The cost of a correct installation is far less than the cost of remedying a bad one — particularly if water damage or refrigerant contamination is involved. When budgeting for an air conditioner, include the cost of a professional installation from the outset.
